Vitamix 5200 vs 6500: Differences

The Vitamix 6500 wins 3 – 1 against the 5200 over programmability, portability, and overall value. Both are great blenders for everyday use. But the 6500 offers more control over speed and a convenient design that is easy to store.

1. Blending Performance

The Winner: Vitamix 6500

Vitamix 5200 Blending Performance

+Power

The motor speed of the Vitamix 5200 is powered by a 2.0 HP motor. While that of the 6500 is powered by a more powerful 2.2 HP motor.

Now, considering that both blenders accommodate a 64-ounce jar (it’s large!) – a 2.2 HP motor is more fitting for its solid size.

The motor power also affects the RPM speed of the blades which is between the 5200 and 6500, I imagine, there is a noticeable difference from the lowest to the highest speed setting.

+Blending Pre-Sets

One of 5200’s drawbacks, but not a flaw, just a lack in comparison to the 6500, is that it has fewer blending/speed features. The 5200 features a 10 variable speed dial and pulse feature. It’s basic and favorable for daily blending use.

The 6500, satisfyingly, offers 10 variable speeds, a pulse feature, and 3 blending programs. Allowing you to blend at the turn of the speed dial 3 specific textures: Smoothie, Hot Soup, and Frozen Dessert.

These are the most common blending textures, right? And they demand different blending speeds.

You don’t need a lot of power when blending smoothies or else the texture may become too thin and watery.

For hot soup, the speed has to be high in order to create friction heat.

And lastly, for frozen dessert like ice cream, the speed must be not too low or high to maintain a consistent blending movement at a steady, balanced rate.

With the 6500, you won’t have to guess what these speeds are supposed to be. Just select the mode and the blender does the rest.

On the Vitamix 5200, you can select from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest) speeds. So there is some guesswork involved.

2. Controls / Settings

The Winner: It’s A Tie!

+Blade Size

This has more to do with how the blender jars of both the Vitamix 5200 vs 6500 are designed.

The 5200 features a slimmer but taller design – which means its base is narrower. So the 3-inch blades are understandable because it covers all corners comfortably as the base has a shorter diameter than the 6500.

The Vitamix 6500, on the other hand, features 4-inch blades that are more compatible with its wide base. The 6500 has a short but spacious base, it makes a wider circle than the 5200.

Both blenders feature high-quality stainless steel blades. And depending on the design of the blender jar, the 3-inch and 4-inch blade diameters are adaptable and stable for intense blending purposes.

3. Cleaning & Maintenance

The Winner: Vitamix 6500

+Height

Both the Vitamix 5200 and 6500 are 64-ounce blenders. But with different heights – which is in favor of the 6500 because it’s shorter than the 5200. This means that the 6500 is more comfortable to store under cabinets.

The Vitamix 5200 is 20.5 inches tall while the 6500 is 17.2 inches. The frame of the 64-ounce blender jar is narrow and tall for the 5200. And for 6500, its design is wider and shorter.

Both are heavy-duty and sturdy in their construction. Easy to maneuver, quick to disassemble, and with a tamper and spill-proof lid for better accessibility.

But when you talk about fitting the blender under a kitchen cabinet conveniently, the Vitamix 6500 won’t look so out of place in a smaller kitchen area.

Vitamix 5200 vs 6500: Similarities

 1. 10 Variable Speeds

Both blenders give you control over how slow or fast you want the blades to spin. You can experiment with different speeds to create perfect textures while making salsa, smoothies, dips, creamy and nutty butters, etc.

The control panel comes with a speed dial that displays speeds from 1 to 10. You can easily go back and forth at different speeds while blending large batches of food. It’s easy and very intuitive with no inconsistencies between blends.

2. Friction Blending

Another fantastic feature of both the Vitamix 5200 vs 6500 is that, at the highest speed, they produce friction heat which is ideal for blending and making hot soup. The large 64-ounce blender jar is compatible with BPA-free plastic construction. So it’s able to take hot blending without pressure build-up, overheating, etc.

Both blenders come with thermal protection sensor and a cooling fan. This keeps the motor cool and running for a prolonged time. It should take you around 7-9 minutes to blend hot soup and serve it directly to dinner.

And in case the motor gets too hot, the thermal protection sensor will sense this and automatically turn the blender as a precaution.

3. Cleaning

Vitamix 5200 Cleaning

Cleaning both the Vitamix 5200 and 6500 is quick, effortless, and automatic. Automatic in that you can add warm water and a few drops of dish soap after using the blender to get rid of any stuck food from under the blades.

This comes in handy after making recipes like butter, chunky salsa, dough, or pancake batters. It’s harder to clean the blades by hand so blending soapy water will dislodge everything effectively.

There is a tamper included to avoid opening the lid all the time when mixing multiple ingredients at once. The tamper is long and stable to use.

Both containers are not dishwasher-safe so you have to rinse them the old-school way and allow them to air dry before blending again.

To end with, they also feature a 7-year warranty. The warranty covers all the important parts of the blender, its features, and even the shipping costs of replacing damaged parts.
